Assisted Living vs Shelter Care
Written by Cindy Gilbert, Admissions Director
As a Continuum Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Good Samaritan Home offers a wide variety of services to the community. Our services range from independent living cottages, assisted living and shelter care, intermediate and skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, and short term rehab care. Warm water aquatic group exercises in our rehab area, as well as outpatient therapy services are also offered.
Today I would like to write a bit about Shelter Care and Assisted Living; as people often question the difference between the two. While both types of care are similar, they can also greatly differ in services offered, cost, and payment methods available. Residents who reside on either neighborhood have three meals provided in the main dining room; have access to the activities and chapel services that Good Sam offers; have telephone, internet, and cable tv services in each room; and have light housekeeping services in their rooms weekly.
Good Samaritan Home’s Assisted Living area is located in Stevenson Manor at the front of the building. These apartments vary in size and cost. Each of these apartments have a kitchenette and a bathroom with a shower in the room. In Assisted Living, a person can start out totally independent and as their needs change, of course depending on what those needs are, their service plan can be adjusted to the appropriate Tier to receive more care. Good Samaritan offers three Tiers of services that are an additional cost to the room rate. A staff member is on duty 24/7 to assist with these services. Designated parking is available for Assisted Living residents that still drive.
Shelter Care at Good Samaritan Home is located in Sheltering Grove by the chapel and east circle areas. Each room has its own bathroom with a communal shower room for their bathing needs. In this area the person is independent with their self-care but has the option of limited assistance with bathing needs and medication administration/oversight. There is a staff member on duty during the day and evening hours. Throughout the night, there is not a staff member on the neighborhood; however, there are call lights in the rooms or pendants to wear that can be pushed in case of emergency.
If a resident in either area needs more assistance, they will have priority to move to a nursing neighborhood at Good Samaritan Home.
This is a brief overview of Good Sam’s Assisted Living and Shelter Care areas. If you would like more information on either of these areas, please call Cindy, Sheryl or Jodi in the admissions office.
