August 8th, 1974 – In an evening televised address to the nation, President Richard Nixon announces his resignation.
August 9th, – 1974 – Vice President Gerald Ford is sworn in as the 38th President of the United States in the East Room of the White House.
August 10th, 1846 – After a decade of debate on how to spend a bequest left to America from an obscure English scientist, President James Polk signs the Smithsonian Institution Act into law.
August 11th, 1934 – The first civilian prisoners, classified as “most dangerous”, arrive on Alcatraz Island, to be housed in the new maximum-security facility.
August 12th, 1990 – The largest ever Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton is discovered near Faith, Utah.
August 13th, 1961 – Shortly after midnight, East German soldiers begin laying down barbed wire and bricks as a barrier between Soviet controlled East Berlin & the Democratic western section, the first components of the Berlin Wall.
August 14th, 1945 – Japan’s unconditional surrender is announced to the world on what becomes known as Victory Day.
