On This Day in History…

August 29^th, 2005: Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near New Orleans as a category 4 storm, wreaking havoc on the bayou state.

August 30^th, 1967: Thurgood Marshall is confirmed as the first African American Supreme Court justice, going on to serve for 24 years.  

August 31^st, 1997: Shortly after midnight, Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in a car crash in Paris while trying to escape paparazzi.

September 1^st, 1972: American Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer defeats Boris Spassky to become the first American to win the World Chess Championship ever.  

September 2^nd, 1945: Japan surrenders aboard the USS Missouri, bringing an end to WWII.

September 3^rd, 1939: UK & France declare war on Germany after Hitler invades Poland.

 September 4^th, 2002: Kelly Clarkson, a cocktail waitress from Texas, wins the very first “American Idol”.
