August 23rd, 1989: Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose accepts a settlement that includes a lifetime ban as punishment for betting on baseball.
August 24th, 79AD: Mount Vesuvius erupts in southern Italy, devastating the cities of Pompeii & Herculaneum & killing thousands.
August 25th, 1944: After 4 years of Nazi occupation, Paris is liberated by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.
August 26th, 1964: Lyndon B. Johnson is nominated to run for the presidency at the Democratic National Convention.
August 27th, 1955: The first edition of “The Guinness Book of Records” debuts in Great Britain, quickly becoming very popular.
August 28th, 1963: On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
