News & Views from Campus: April 17th – April 23rd

This and That…

-Thomas J. Oakley, who helped grow Quincy Media Inc. (former owners of WGEM, the Herald-Whig, and 13 other TV stations across the US) into the 13 largest media company in the country, passed away at his home in Quincy last Wednesday. He was 89.

Oakley was as big an advocate as there was for Quincy, Adams County, West-Central Illinois, and even Northeast Missouri, working tirelessly to improve highway transportation and infrastructure in the region. He was instrumental in securing funding to complete the Central Illinois Expressway (Interstate 72), the Chicago to KC Expressway which runs through Quincy, and the Avenue of Saints from St. Louis up to Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Minnesota.

Oakley worked with elected officials on all levels, and business leaders in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa to help promote projects vital to our region. He will be deeply missed by our communities.

Happy Birthday

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
